In 1896, James Edgar Murdock left England for South Africa, bringing with him a passion for fine jewellery, distinguished timepieces and the traditions of exceptional craftsmanship.

A year later, in 1897, he founded Murdock’s Watchmakers and Jewellers, one of Cape Town’s earliest recognised jewellery establishments. Its first intimate store opened on the corner of Parliament and Longmarket Streets, in the historic heart of the city.

Through the years, Murdocks became renowned for its expertise, discretion and exacting standard of personal service. This reputation attracted an eminent clientele, including notable historical figures such as Cecil John Rhodes, King George and Queen Frederika of Greece. It is recorded that Rhodes, rather than alighting from his carriage to enter the store, would request that Murdocks’ jewellers bring their selection and expertise directly to him — an early testament to the exceptional level of service for which the house became known.

That same tradition continues today. Generations later, Murdocks remains devoted to offering discerning clients knowledgeable guidance, personal attention and a truly bespoke jewellery experience.
